South Dakota Taxes Explained (for 2025)

South Dakota is one of the few states in the U.S. that does not collect a state income tax. That means if you work in South Dakota, your paycheck will not be reduced by any state tax. This helps you keep more of what you earn.

But you still pay federal taxes, which are taken by the U.S. government. These include:

  • Federal Income Tax – This is based on how much money you earn in a year and your filing status (like Single or Married).
  • Social Security Tax – 6.2% of your income goes to help people who are retired or disabled.
  • Medicare Tax – 1.45% of your income goes to help pay for health care for people over age 65.

Your employer also pays taxes, like unemployment insurance and workers’ compensation. These do not come out of your paycheck.
